NLSC Trip Report

Light Winds Fail to Discourage Pepin Wombatants

By Connie Dove

High seas, strong winds and a competent crew could be used to describe the Lake Pepin trip on July 24-25. Of course, only the ‘competent crew’ portion would be altogether accurate. Although, only light winds could be found by the Wombat crew of seven, with skipper Rod Martenson and social director Shirley Martenson, two beautiful days were enjoyed on the water with blue skies and perfect temperatures.

Crew members Kim Wright, Keith and Nancy Berwald, Judy Pahlow and Connie Dove enjoyed the excellent provisions provided by the skipper and social director, including incredible shish kabobs prepared on a grill assembled in the park that very afternoon (How many parts were there Rod?)!

Good times were had by all on Saturday afternoon field trips to the many shops and restaurants in the Lake City and Wabasha area, as well as geo-caching excursions both days led by Kim Wright.

Rousing evening games of “Crowns & Anchors” and blackjack kept the evening full of good humor, with frequent witticisms by our captain.

Although we were promised the wind dance on Sunday by said captain if the winds did not return, the pink tights were never donned and we faced another day of light winds and an overheating engine. In all, it was an enjoyable weekend with a great captain, social director and crew!
