January 2021 Members Meeting

Everything You Wanted to Know About GPS but Were Afraid to Ask
Join us for the January 19th NLSC meeting via Zoom. The topic is Marine GPS. For a starter,
GPS stands for Global Positioning System and is a network of “geostationary” satellites
maintained by the US Department of Defense. Using an electronic device as small as your
smartphone or smartwatch, users can find their exact location on the surface of planet earth.
Mr. Scott Seager from West Marine will deliver a 40-minute presentation on the basics as well
as some intricate details and capabilities of a variety of GPS devices. His discussion will cover many of the
following topics:
• Turning on a GPS
• How to operate the MOB function
• When is GPS most helpful?
• When is GPS not helpful?
• Do you always need a backup?
• Some latest and greatest GPS features
• How and where on a boat do you install a GPS? Tips about antennae, etc.
• How many years does a GPS last? When and why should you buy an updated model?
• How can GPS be connected to other electronics for advanced features such as true wind and wind

December 2020 Holiday Meeting

Our in-person holiday party may be on hold this year, but our fundraiser will
still go on! This year’s beneficiary will be Urban Boatbuilders. Their mission is “to empower
youth to succeed in work and life through woodworking and experiential learning.”
Urban Boatbuilders will be joining our December 15th Zoom meeting with a presentation about
their life-changing programs for youth that provide opportunities and skills needed to succeed
in life. They work on these skills primarily through building boats, paddles, and longboards.
